Wit and Humour
Humour is built, not sprinkled onto a text. A writer controls what characters know, when information arrives, which expectation is overturned, and how a line sounds aloud. This unit teaches you to recognise incongruity, comic timing, exaggeration, wordplay, and dramatic irony while also judging the effect of a joke on its target. You will study dialogue as both punctuation and social action: a grammatically correct sentence can still be tactless, while a well-phrased question can repair a misunderstanding. Original scenes and a playful poem provide material for comprehension, vocabulary, grammar, performance, and comic writing. The aim is not merely to find something funny, but to explain the craft and choose humour responsibly.
